Why Dance Classes Are Ideal for the Exercise-Averse

by Kitty Obrien

It can sometimes feel like the whole world has gone fitness crazy. And while there's no denying the benefits of keeping yourself in good shape, it's easier said than done for some people. The problem is often being motivated enough to get started. If you're not someone who naturally enjoys exercise, there are probably plenty of things you'd rather be doing, and the thought of going to the gym or heading out for a run is pretty low down your list of priorities. If this sounds like you but you'd like to be fitter, taking dance classes could be the perfect solution. Here's why.

It doesn't feel like exercise

When you think about exercise, you're probably not imagining anything like dance. Yet it's a great way to keep fit, and it's a lot of fun, too. That's what makes it so useful for people who don't enjoy fitness. You'll have a great time and really enjoy your classes, and you won't feel the negative things you normally associate with exercising.

It's more social

Unless you know people who are really into fitness, exercise can be a largely solo pursuit. Even then, you're likely to be doing a lot of your workouts on your own. Taking dance classes gives you the chance to meet new people and work together to improve your skills. That makes it something to look forward to more than other types of exercise.

The progression is more fun

Working out gives you a clear progression in terms of how intensely you can exercise or how far you can run. But that's not necessarily something you'll enjoy. Learning to dance makes it easier to see how you're progressing, and noticing your skills get better with each class is a lot of fun.

It's great for all-around fitness

Perhaps you enjoy one type of exercise but don't like others. If that's the case, you're not taking care of your overall fitness, which neglects certain factors. Dancing gets your heart pumping and helps you stay flexible, so it's a good way to keep yourself in good shape overall without having to keep up with several types of exercise.

It's suitable for everyone

If you've never really been into exercise, just the thought of getting started can be daunting. This is even more the case if you feel really out of shape or if you're not as young as you used to be. Because dance can easily be tailored to your personal ability, you can start from where you are without worrying about your suitability. A dance teacher will take into account who you are and keep the lessons suitable for you.

About Me

How the Performing Arts Improved My Life

Before I got into the performing arts, I really didn't have a clue what I was doing. I was very unhappy and I felt that I just couldn't express myself. This made me drink more than I should. However, I was mostly bored. Thankfully, I was able to take part in some performing arts program. I remember when I was a child, I would visit my mother who is in hospital. She was very unwell, but all of the family made it there. When I decided to take up yoga, I embranced the performing arts and I visit as many shows as I can.
